I wish to pursue a career in media management. I would like to be in a position to make decisions that will ultimately influence or perhaps help to change the perceptions about African Americans and level the playing field for all minorities in the media, both in front of and behind the camera and in the boardrooms. There are still far too many negative perceptions and stereotypes portrayed in both print and broadcast media of black women, despite the fact that the U.S has produced very talented, successful and positive black women such as Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama, yet society continues to focus on the negative images of black women in the media. Although the entertainment industry has come a long way in moving towards the direction of the inclusion of more minorities on television and movies in a more positive light, there is still a long way to go. As a young black woman, a career in media management will afford me the opportunity to begin to permanently change that landscape by helping to create job opportunities for women and minorities to be portrayed positively.
