Throughout my life I have had to sit by and watch my family members suffer from life threatening diseases or medical conditions. Having to watch as my great-aunts suffered from sickle cell disease, which is very common in African-Americans, made me feel helpless because I wasn’t able to do anything to help ease their pain and comfort them. There was even an incident with my own mother coming so close to death from an asthma attack. I kept insisting she get checked by a doctor, but she wouldn’t hear any of it. I was eventually able to convince my own doctor to check her out before we left, and it turns out I had saved a life. Almost losing my mother to something that could be so easily prevented made me realize that I wanted to do everything in my power to help improve the lives of others including my family. I’ll dedicate my life to improving the health of humanity as a whole.
