If I could make a living doing what I really love I would own a dog training business. This dog training business is not simply going to turn a loving dog with a few bad habits into a perfectly behaved dog. My plan is to adapt shelter dogs that are unloved and train them to be productive members of this society.
In today’s society we are in the age of technology, people looking to use technology to solve every medical disorder. However you don’t always need a high tech solution, sometimes all you need is love and compassion. Therapy dogs can help people facing various disorders. I am especially interested in post-traumatic stress disorder that affects veterans. Common symptoms of PTSD are patients experiencing episodes that include reliving events, nightmares, and having uneasy feelings. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, seven out of every hundred veterans experience PTSD. That translates to 5.2 million adults suffering with PTSD during any given year. My goal is to turn dogs from local shelters into therapy dogs. Therapy dogs can affect the neurotransmitters in the brain, like decrease cortisol levels which are associated with causing stress. Since veterans might also be facing physical challenges, I will teach these dogs’ helpful skills like retrieving objects and detecting a PTSD episode. My plan will reduce the number of dogs that are euthanized while helping the brave men and women that have fought to protect American lives.
