If I could get paid to do anything that I wanted, I would be a mentor. I wouldn’t just mentor underprivileged youths, I would mentor any child needing it. I believe that our society has taken such a drastic turn in a negative direction because our future children lack the proper guidance and support to help make them productive, successful members of society. They don’t have anyone to go to for help, advice, to be a confidant, to give them alternatives to dealing with gangs and drugs, or sexuality. They are often products of single parent homes who are spending majority of their time working minimum wage jobs so they are out the home most of the time just to pay the bills.
To make this dream a reality, I would secure a large enough location that could accommodate about 200 people. It would also have to be able to have computers with accessories, a small library, a lounge area, a kitchen for “family meals,” and a few mini offices for discussing confidential information. And then I would seek out the help from community leaders and other every day men and women who made it out of the bad situations themselves and who could relate to the kids. The children’s families would also have outside support from my mentoring program.
A program such as this is needed in so many communities. I believe it would make such a difference with what is going on in the world today.
