The ability to earn a living as a traveling Marriage and Family Therapist would be my dream career. Participating in one of the “helping” professions seems like the most natural thing in the world to me. I have counseled friends and family members about their relationships as far back as I can remember. Sadly, this would include my parents who divorced when I was a teenager. I am convinced they would still be together today if they had had access to counseling in our home or at their offices.
The divorce rate in industrialized countries is quite high. The most common reasons involve financial and social time constraints. De-emphasis of the family has become problematic for many working couples with employment scarce and wages stagnant. As a result, marriages and families continue to crumble under the pressures of modern society.
Changing the business model in many other fields has proven successful (traveling nurses, mobile pet grooming), etc. To mitigate the time constraints on families I would travel to people’s homes, or businesses (lunch hour) in order to counsel them. To assuage the financial hardship of counseling, I would work on an affordable, sliding scale. Keeping strong family relationships is vital for the health and productivity of all societies, and I would like to be a part of changing the tide.
