To be honest, I already earn a part-time living doing the things I love most in this world….. dancing, culture/history, and most of all giving the youth of NYC knowledge of themselves, as well as the world that surrounds them. My dream is to achieve a PhD in History and/or Cultural Studies, so I can continue to teach my students more about who we were, are and will become. Seven years ago, I was miserable working for selfish people, feeling as if my life was empty, devoid of real purpose. I left the business world (administration for a commercial printing firm) on faith, only to be offered a job teaching in an after-school program in West Harlem and the Upper East Side. Every since, there have been calls to come and share the curriculum I created to included sewing, crafts, dance, history of the Diaspora, and basic life lessons/skills all fused together to help expose options for the youth. To let them know, you can be anything you want to be, if you are willing to work for it. My return to college was fueled by the occasionally correspondence from my former students, their parents, and co-teachers reminding me to keep focused and push me forward everyday to continue learning to teach….. Pay it forward. My students give me life.
