For the past six years of my life my greatest passion has been color guard. It is an activity that allows for exercise as well as artistic expression. I would absolutely love to be a color guard director, designer, instructor, and/or choreographer for a living. Something I found very inspirational is that there is a program called the South Shore Drill Team in Chicago. At-risk youth come to a clinic after school, rather than going out on the streets, and learn to perform in this activity. It means everything to the children and teenagers to have positive role models and to be proud of themselves and their achievements. Rather than getting mixed up with the wrong crowd or even a dangerous home life, these kids get to burn off energy doing what they love. I thought it was crazy color guard could help troubled children lead better lives. After volunteering as an AmeriCorps VISTA, I learned that any interest in children’s lives and interests is beneficial. Even if I could not make as big of an impact as the South Shore Drill Team, I still believe I can help at least a few through color guard.
