South Sudan is the country I am from. A country where we only had a glimpse of freedom, then it was taken July 9, 2011 South Sudan gained its independence from Northern Sudan and two years later, December 15, 2013, we were at war again with our own people. Thousands of innocent lives were left to die with little to no medical assistance. My life dream is to become a doctor and to go back home to help my people. After college I am going to going to medical school to become a doctor, then a surgeon. I remember watching a video of my father’s trip back home and there was a man with broken foot and there was nothing he could do about it. With no money and help given to them they have to live with their disabilities. This man spoke of how they were forgotten and just left behind, “If I was in America I would get help, but they do not care about us here.” Hearing this hit me hard because those are my people and they feel like nobody cares for them. Becoming a surgeon may not change the whole world but it will change the world of my people. To become a surgeon means my parents leaving their country to come to a different world where they knew nobody and did not speak the language meant something. Not only would the lives I would save world change but my life would change as well.
