I truly believe in educating others. Currently, I’m a uprising Junior at Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA), and I’m a Mandarin Chinese tutor. I founded “Ai’Wan’s Tutoring services, because I saw that there was a need. XULA partnered with the Confucius Institute (CI) in 2012. I’m more advanced than my classmates and I wanted others, that needed my help, to hopefully be as passionate as I am about learning the language. In my tutoring sessions I show students how to write the Chinese characters in traditional and simplified versions. I help them with the pronunciations of the ping yin, which is the official phonetic system for the Mandarin Chinese Language. In other words, I showed them where to place the inflection on the words. I have tutored over the phone, as well as met groups or individuals in the library, lunchroom, or wherever we can meet and study. Besides my tutoring in the Chinese language, I also tutor my fellow classmates in music composition. Being an avid bassoonist, pianist, and flutist for several years, I have also become very comfortable with composing my own music. I find it to be very exciting yet relaxing. It feels really fantastic to be able to pass on my love of the Chinese language and music to others.
My goal is to continue onto graduate school and acquire Masters Degrees in Mandarin Chinese and Music. Maybe, I’ll travel back to China and try my hand at teaching English and Music to children there.
