I hopped off the SHAWCO bus in Manenberg, South Africa when Eden came running up to me yelling my name. She gave me the biggest hug a Grade R student could give all while I had the biggest smile on my face. The feeling I had in that moment is what I want to spend my life feeling.

If I could make a living doing what I love the most, it would be working in after school programs such as SHAWCO, getting to know young kids and guiding them throughout their education. This would change the world because knowledge is power. Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” After school tutoring programs are so important, because it helps children focus on school and learning. The volunteers that work with organizations such as SHAWCO help the children realize how much potential they have and encourage them to stay in school through University.

In order to make this dream of assisting afterschool programs abroad a reality I would like to apply to programs such as World Teach and CIEE Teaching programs in order to completely immerse myself in a culture. Once participating in an abroad program I would like to work as a full-time employee as to continue serving and to help others serve a community to the best of their ability.
