I may not know a whole lot at being 23 years old, but I have found that my greatest joys have come from volunteering. My favorite volunteer opportunity came from an after school program for underprivileged children called Children In Schools. I started as a volunteer and loved it so much I asked about working there. I grew to love every one of these children and everyday I would learn something that helped me piece together their unique personalities. When we gave the children a new activity or game they lit up! Even though they had been in school all day, they still wanted to learn after hours which was amazing. We gave the children snacks, let them play outside, helped with homework, gave them educational activities and even let them put together a talent show. This didn’t even feel like work to me, it felt like I was making a difference in these childrens lives. These children were not fortunate enough to have someone that could pick them up at 3:30, help with homework, play games together, or ask how their day went. That was our responsibility. Unfortunately, the program did not have enough funding to go on, so in 2013 I had to say goodbye to my babies. This would be my dream job, but I would take it a step further and become the director so that I can place them in every school district. There are many children who could benefit from programs like this.
