If I could earn a living in my dream job, I would work in geoengineering. As a geoengineer, my job would be to figure out how to use technology to artificially reverse or mitigate global climate change and the damage it has done. Climate change is, in my opinion, the most pressing issue facing humankind. We have already been facing grave short-term consequences of it, such as hurricanes Irene and Sandy. The potential long-term consequences of it could be catastrophic, irrevocably altering our way of life and society as we know it. Unfortunately, the time for this problem to be solved with low carbon or carbon emissions free energy sources alone may have passed. Thus, technologies such as the ones that I would develop to reverse global climate change could end up making a huge difference. When pursuing such a career, in order to become acquainted with the technical aspects of it I would have to get a degree in environmental engineering. Furthermore, I would have to minor in meteorology so that I could fully understand the potential effects, intended and unintended, of my work on the climate. After obtaining the necessary education, I would go to work for a company that has the same passion as me for the environment and is already committed to pursuing geoengineering projects.
