Confucius, a wise Chinese philosopher, once said, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” For decades, we spend our lives searching for a career be it through education or a family owned business that we expect to eventually help us settle down comfortably in a world rich in everything but comfort. However, the true recipe for success is pursuing a career that will not only make you happy but will also contribute to the Earth we call “home”. In my case, I hope to change the world by studying and experimenting with an incredible field of science: Biochemistry.
While others find it intimidating, I find Biochemistry so beautiful and fascinating (don’t judge me). Biochemistry is the boss of all sciences; it moves life along by understanding how the single smallest units of the universe (a cell and an atom) work together. Doesn’t it sound incredible to anyone else that our entire life is based on cells and atoms within and around us? It gave me chills just thinking about that!
Although I am still a college freshmen, I would like to go to Tulane Medical School to become an oncologist and study Biochemistry there. Hopefully, one day I can come up with a cure for cancer while treating patients. While we certainly have the technology, we still lack the research and understanding of how cancer works. The good thing is that Biochemistry is such a vast field with infinite mysteries and possibilities still unexplored by man. One day and with the help of Biochemistry, I will cure cancer: an unstoppable disease that has claimed too many innocent lives. Through many years, restless nights, and 2,000 cups of coffee, Biochemistry and I will save millions upon millions of lives. At least I know I won’t ever have to work a day in my life getting there.
