As the transporter turns I see the first members of my crew enter the ship. “Welcome aboard the UCS Challenger!” I say with enthusiasm, as the sixth graders pass onto the bridge. once all of the “officers” have arrived, I proceed to divide them into their different jobs. A captain, first officer, and ambassador are chosen. The excitement in the childrens eyes is easily visible as they prepare for a space adventure they never dreamed they could have, and the captain shines with pride at being given the highest honor of being the commanding officer of the vessel. After a brief training period the crew is given their mission. I then step through the transporter and leave the ship in the control of the young captain.
Behind the scenes, I step into my control room. Taking a seat in the flight directors chair, I select a song that will get the new crew into the mood of the mission. As the music fills both my control room and the bridge, the kids squirm with excitement. Then, accompanied by a sound I select from the soundboard, I speak through a voice changer and address the crew as their main computer. “Main computer now online. This is the voice of your main computer. How may I serve you?”
