When I first read the prompt for this essay, I had to take a moment to really consider what I would do if I could be paid to do anything. I love music, would I be a musician? I could pour my heart out on stage in front of a crowd every night. I’m a sports fan, I could become an athlete, or maybe I’d take a paycheck just to watch other athletes if playing became too labor-intensive. Actually, I love lazy days, I could always just do nothing at all and collect a paycheck in the process. However, there is only one “career” that I would truly love. I would speak to people.
When I think about the ups and downs of my life, I always think about how great the ups were, because someone was by my side, taking the ride with me. When I was down, another friend would be there to console me. I want to offer that service to others. Think less like a counselor, and more like a freelance friend. Cheesy? Sure. Sounds like a Mitch Albom novel? Totally. Enriching? 100%. I owe so much to the people who were a friend to me, and I would love to return the favor. We’re only hanging around here so long before we pass on earth to the next group, so we might as well take care of one another. Also, I’d probably still play professional baseball, you know, if the offer’s on the table.
