On June 17th 2006 my life was changed forever. I became a first time Mom, and I knew from then on I would have to show an example. I knew I wanted to pursue a career I was happy with and something that would provide a better life for my Son Kristian. Fast forward a couple of years and on September 7th 2010 I found out I was expecting again, this time a little girl. I hadn’t started my original goal or dream. I had to get on the ball. I made the decision I would pursue my goal, I wanted to work with numbers and people. Accounting was the career for me. I then took the necessary steps to start my goal. I knew I wouldn’t be able to finish it because of the new baby coming, but I would get it started and finish it after she is born.
My love of math and numbers began early; I knew I loved the subject in junior high school. I realized that math fascinated me and I was good at it. My grades showed this as I was getting A’s in my classes. High school was even better, I had outstanding teachers, I enjoyed the extra credit assignments given, and I was excelling. I spoke with a few counselors in high school and after toying with the idea of a medical career (since it was so prosperous); I gave it much thought and realized I really disliked science. I knew I still wanted to work with people, as I was part of F.F.A and J.R.O.T.C., and enjoyed doing the community and charity events with these groups. One day it clicked, Accounting. They worked with numbers, they made good money, they worked with people, and they are always in demand for businesses and tax season.
At the age of 23 I spoke with a mentor at the Job council, he advised me to talk to bookkeepers and accountants in the area. I spoke with a gentleman that did accounting and the more and more he spoke about his profession the more I knew this is what I wanted to do.
I returned back to school when my daughter was 1 ½. In the end, after I finish my degree, I will provide a better life for my children. They are one of the most important things to me. I will prove to them and all, that single moms can make it on their own, and achieve their dreams. I have had amazing support from community services, my family, and my friends. I can use my degree to help single low income parents get their taxes filed correctly, maximizing their returns, help them with school funds, budgeting, and help them set up accounts for their children’s college funds. I can also show my kids proper spending, budgeting, and saving for their future, and the future generations. In the end my family can live happy, healthy, financially secure, and I can pass my knowledge on to future generations. This is how I will shine!
