Among the 102,619 Sioux, age 5 and over, in 2000, only 15% spoke their language (2000 Census). I am a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, Father, Full Time Employee, and College Student at my Tribal College (Sinte Gleska University). You asked how I would save the world, but yet I cant save the entire world. I would like to save my people’s language and culture, our world. The way that I am working towards doing that is studying for my bachelors of computer science, and through this degree I am learning mobile device app development. By doing something that I love, I am going to help my people regain our language.
This fall for my senior project, I’m starting the development of a language app, one that is developed by a Sioux person and understands how my language is supposed to be used. I spent the last several years learning Java and C++ coding, and in addition to that I have also taken courses on Android App Development specifically for this purpose. There are many people that have tried to do this, but because of their lack of understanding of my people and our customs they have been unsuccessful.
I hope that my dream is fulfilled, I would love to see my children be able to use a program that is interactive and teaches them their language. My children and my culture are my world, and I hope that you will be able to help my dream.
Thank You
