I’ve often whiled away an afternoon knee-deep in a book. Certainly, it’s a kind of escapism but there are worse things than getting lost in a good story. I love to write my own stories for others to explore. I would love it even more if I could make a living writing those stories. It would take a lot of hard work to achieve that goal.
I’m guilty of reading those websites, the ones that give you the “Top 22 tips for being a great writer!!” They all say the same thing I’ve always heard, mostly from great writers. Spend an hour writing creatively and don’t forget to do a half an hour of journaling… Every day. Oh, and you should read for a while. No, no, not that easy stuff, you better challenge yourself!! What I’m getting at is that it’s a lot of effort. I wouldn’t have to just start writing more, I would have to start being prolific..
People don’t talk about fiction changing the world but I think it can have a great impact. There are books I read as a child that changed me and made me who I am. Stories change how people think about the world and what’s possible. The whole concept of chasing your dream and succeeding in the face of adversity sounds like the plot of story. If I write one piece that changes one person for the better, the hard work would all be worth it.
