If I could earn a living doing something that I loved, it would be making films and acting in them. Films have been a successful way to better educate the public on issues that are going on in our world , in a more subtle and entertaining way. Some of the best film makers are ones that tell a meaningful story and make you think. For decades the entertainment industry has struggled with diversity amongst its female actors and amongst directors in general. Women of color are less likely to be seen in starring roles and when they are, these roles are usually stereotypes that have been attributed to them over the years. As an aspiring African American actress/director, I would love to see more women who look like me in inspiring roles or major blockbuster projects. As a writer and filmmaker I would take risks with my actors and judge them on their acting abilites and not on the color of their skin and whether or not it will sell tickets. This is why in all the screenplays I have written there are people of all ethnicites with meaningul roles. Also as an aspiring actress I won’t limit myself to auditioning for roles that are slated only for African Americans. If I find a role I love I will audition. Having a more diverse entertainment industry shows the world that we are taking steps at mending the racial divide that has plagued our country even to this day.
