Growing up in a family of physicians, it was always expected that I would follow the same path. I was unsure if medicine was the right career for me, so I decided to test myself. I found that I had a passion for science and took every science course offered at my high school. I began volunteering at the hospital and local nursing home and found that I loved being in an environment where I was involved in the care of others. I observed in the ER and job shadowed an orthopedic surgeon. I was a research volunteer at the Voss Lab at UC Davis, where we studied the proteins involved in the study of a cure for Alzheimer’s.
Medicine and caring for others is something I am truly passionate about and now I am on my way to make a living doing what I love. This fall I will be attending my dream school and number one public school in the world, UC Berkeley, as a pre- med student. The specific goals I have set for myself are to maintain a high GPA, volunteer, job- shadow and research throughout my years at Cal, and to do well on the MCAT to be admitted into a good medical school. I believe that every life saved or made easier is making an incredible impact on the world. In a matter of years, I’ll be Dr. Sharma, contributing to that impact while following my heart.
