For a long time now, I have wanted to become an English teacher. I have always loved reading and writing, and I want to spread that enjoyment across the minds of the next generation. I feel as though many students don’t appreciate the English language and the beauty that comes with it. They don’t appreciate the brilliance of such works as Hamlet and Fahrenheit 451. I want to change that. I want future students to enjoy reading, even if it’s “just another summer reading book.” I want them to write for the sake of enlightenment, so that they can express themselves in ways they could not before. Reading and writing truly are some of the greatest ways to achieve understanding, and on top of that, both are necessary to succeed in the real world. As a teacher, I would focus on helping my students understand as much as they can on both subjects. I would have them study and identify themes and symbols in various forms of literature, and I would also have them write essays and poetry, among other genres. They would receive the best education possible, as opposed to the “pointless garbage” they’ve been told about for so long. To achieve this dream, I plan to attend Southern Utah University and receive my teaching degree. I will study English literature and creative writing extensively. To do this, I need all the funding I can get; to receive this scholarship would help me immensely.
