Sharing in someone’s life is the greatest gift one can bestow upon another. When individual’s suffering and successes are united they become a gift, one of intimacy, trust, and common humanity. I have often dreamed of becoming a healer, and teacher so as to share in these sacred treasures possessed by all. I have dreamed of traveling the world and sampling in these gems of existence, collecting each like sacred treasures, and when my body could take no more, I would transcribe my veritable bounty, weaving the favors given through shared experiences into a literary quilt capable of exposing the one true reality; no matter our origin, theology, genetics, or age that we are all the same, we are all beings in search of the same basic resources. But how, one may ask will this change the world? When we as individuals realize that the people dwelling so far away in cultures so seemingly alien compared to our own are no different from those residing across the street we can find empathy and understanding within our hearts and, armed with this knowledge, maybe some semblance of the peace that all great theologians, prophets, visionaries and thinkers have purported will become possible. I once heard that when it comes to goals, “shoot for the stars for the worst may happen is you reach the moon”. The construct of peace may have a stellar address, but mutual understanding and respect are the lunar stepping stone that will rocket us there.
