I feel that an appropriate balance between being successful financially and the need to serve others by giving back is doing what you love and having a passion for it, while sharing that joy with others. I have been on both sides of this issue and am now finding that balance.
Being successful financially is strongly dependent upon one’s view. I had a stable job that made excellent money with great benefits and all. But there was an urge inside me that felt I needed to serve people by doing God’s work. I have always had a desire to work with pregnant teens and did my research and found a Christian ministry nearby called Care Net. So one day I quit my secure job to begin volunteer training. Everyone thought I was crazy and at times I thought I was too!
Care Net provides pregnancy tests, options counseling, ultrasounds, and parenting classes at no cost to women of all ages facing unplanned pregnancies. I have been a client advocate, receptionist, and parenting mentor there. Everything in my life, including my attitude towards others, has been completely changed. Serving others is such a humbling perspective. My desire for serving pregnant teens grows deeper each day as I see their cry for help and someone to love them.
After many prayers and wisdom from friends, I have decided to go back to school to finish my education in Liberal Arts and Science. With this degree I will be able to work at job that I have a passion for while making money. This is what giving back to the community is all about. Receiving and giving back!
