I want to become a teacher, and teach English to underprivileged students. Students in areas where college seems unlikely or even impossible. I want to teach English for the career world, not just the collegiate world. I work hard to make sure I don’t lose track of what it feels like to be a student, so I can connect with students better. I want to engage and connect with my students.
This may not seem like a world-changing goal. But worlds are changed one person at a time, and I’ll be changing dozens of lives. Perhaps they’ll decide they can go to college after all, or perhaps they will start their own business with what I have taught them. Perhaps it will just make their lives, and their children’s lives, better to learn things like how to negotiate raises and interact with coworkers, which I would teach by assigning many, many essays to make them eloquent.
