The main goal that I hope to achieve is the reformation of the criminal justice system. Specifically, I aspire to design and implement programs in juvenile detention centers, jails, and prisons throughout the country that focus on education and rehabilitation. I believe that nothing is more powerful than education, and that everyone has the right to learn. These programs would give people the skills necessary to become productive members of society, effectively reducing recidivism and crime rates. These changes would also have a positive impact on things such as decreasing homelessness, drug addiction, and abuse. Altering the focus of criminal justice from punishment to rehabilitation will ultimately make the entire system more effective. I plan to earn my Master’s in Social Work and use the experience I have volunteering in prisons and detention centers to explore what people in incarceration really need, in order to benefit the entire country.
