I’ve really structured my life around the idea of doing for a living what I love most, and that would be serving others. I will be graduating with my Bachelor of Arts in Social Welfare and Justice from Marquette University in December 2014. It has been a very difficult path for me to get there, but worth every second. I have been a case manager for an AIDS service organization for the past 3 years and I love the work that I do, helping adults with any variety of barriers they may face – housing, mental health, medical, insurance and more. Due to my own struggles with alcohol addiction, I needed to take time off from college after my junior year in 2009. I’ve been sober going on 5 years and I was able to work full time and work my way back to Marquette to finish what I started. Since January 2014 I’ve been working full time and attending school full time, which has been very demanding but I do it to continue to further my career in Social Work, the career I love. I plan to continue on to graduate school to earn my Master’s in Social Work so I can further serve my community. My favorite part of social work is the ability to aid individuals, all while they still make their own decisions. It’s very motivating and heartwarming to see individuals overcome large obstacles in their lives, much as I overcame obstacles in mine.
