I will do something that I love to do and it will change the world; I am going to be a teacher. That is exactly why, after graduating high school over twenty-four years ago, I decided to get my college degree. You see, in my family school – especially college – was not an option. Neither of my parents made it through high school, neither did my sisters. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, they are a solid, proud and successful people whom I admire. But I have always thought that I missed something by not going to college, even though I started several successful businesses and worked successfully in several dot coms at an executive level.
I am halfway through my undergraduate degree. Next semester I transfer to Hunter to enroll in their special education program. I want to take special education because my cousin is a teacher who has an autistic son, and to see her ability to bring out the best in his beautiful mind is remarkable. I am sure that she has the same impact on her students.
So that got me thinking, if I could have a positive impact on just one of my students then wouldn’t I be changing his world? And perhaps he would in turn pay it forward by changing someone else’s world, and so on. If each of us tried to have a positive impact on just one person in our lives then the world would truly be changed for the better.
