I am blessed enough to be in a field of work that I love and I do believe that it could change the world. I am an American Sign Language interpreter. I interpret from English to ASL and from ASL to English. There is a stigma with Deaf people and how they are the ones who only need interpreters but really the people who can hear need interpreters to communicate also. It is a two way street. I am happy that I can clarify the misunderstandings and correct the stereotypes that come with the job. Little by little I can help people become aware of the talents of Deaf people and how they most definitely can contribute to society, all by being an interpreter. I think it’s the people who help others, one on one, who make a real difference and can feel themselves doing so. There are days when people are too stubborn and closed minded to even talk to one another but that doesn’t discourage me. I know that when we create an environment where others can shine we are doing more than most. I wish more jobs allowed for the opportunities to serve like mine does, instead of just chances to step on other’s back on your way to the top. I have a chance to raise awareness on a topic that can effect anyone’s life and I am happy to do so.
