If I could earn a living doing what I love most it would be to become an Orientation and Mobility Specialist. An O & M specialist teaches children and adults how to walk who have disabilities. This is a life skill everyone benefits from. You don’t realize how precious walking is until you are unable to do it anymore. O & M specialists even help people in wheelchairs learn how to propel their wheelchairs so they can become independent. I work with a Deaf-blind student who wasn’t able to walk when I started working with him 3 years ago. An O&M specialist showed me the proper techniques to teach the student how to walk. Since the specialist was only there an hour a week, she was unable practice with the student everyday. Now the student can walk quite well on his own. This was very rewarding for me and the student. I loved seeing the results the student progressed to. I am going to be graduating with my Bachelor’s degree this year. I hope to be accepted into the Master’s program for Orientation and Mobility. Unfortunately there are only a handful of colleges in the country that offer this program. I hope that you will consider me for this scholarship so I can pay for my tuition for my senior year this year.
