If I had the resources and money I do animal therapy with children and teenagers that have depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Animal therapy has proven to do wonders for children and teenagers that have gone through trauma and develop these mental illnesses as a result. Having an animal allows them to have “someone” to talk to without judgment and taking care of an animal improves day to day routine, work ethic, and encourages responsibility. I’d have shelters donate friendly dogs and cats, which would undergo training. I would work with mental health centers to direct the children or teenagers that would benefit most from animal therapy to attend a group session set up at the centers. After going to various mental institutions and out-patient programs to set up a client base, I would open my own space and have those mental health centers give references to the animal therapy group. If I could expand I would open a farm with more animals – like horses. At these farms I would expand and have a residential like facility for families ,who are just beginning to do therapy, could stay for intense 3-6 week sessions for intense therapy ( individual, different groups) focusing primarily on working with an animal. My way of changing the world would be to have face to face caring interactions, to empower people to realize they can overcome even the worst trauma, and providing hope and strength to those whose own has been trampled.
