Honestly, that is an easy question for me to answer because I am living my dream. I am currently a Library Assistant III at a community library of the Birmingham Public Library system and I manage our library’s social media site, Facebook. This gives me the opportunity to share positive messages and images with city leaders and the people in our community. With so much negativity in the world, I ask myself the question, “How would the world change if the media broadcast positive news and images instead of focusing on the negative aspects of the world?” I now realized that I may not own a radio or tv station, but here was my opportunity to share community activities worldwide via Facebook. As for my role in social media changing the world, the significance of news reporting, political landscapes, marketing, distance education, and interaction are keys to social media changing the world. While taking the leadership role as an Social Media Specialist, I created Tech Day Tuesday, a weekly Facebook post designed to inform the community of current technology trends. Later this year, the Emmet O’Neal Library followed suit in the creation of Media Mondays which launched in June. Overall, I feel that I have become much more socially aware due to social media and that social media will considerably affect the future generation. The rise of such a medium of communication has resulted in a paradigm shift that will transform society from this point in time forward.
