With my Marketing major, I hope that I can pursue a career that not only allows me to support local businesses, but also encourages consumers to buy locally-made products. Chain retailers such as Target, Walgreens, and K-mart have been extremely beneficial to consumers in terms of convenience, as I myself openly shop at some of these stores. As the hustle-and-bustle of life quickly takes charge, however, the majority of us as consumers seem to sometimes forget the neighborhood fineries that are local, specialty shops. Moreover, our society tends to be more concerned with whether if a store’s specific product is in stock, versus actually knowing how that product arrived there in the first place. After receiving my Marketing degree, I want to advertise to shoppers about their local businesses, how special these products are, and how these businesses benefit their community. For example, I would pitch campaigns geared towards the individuality that small businesses provide. With this in mind, the customer could know the uniqueness of the hand-carved, Cedar dining set purchased from the neighborhood artisan, or the creativity used to knit the yarn blanket bought from the small sole-proprietor across the block. Furthermore, most of these businesses do not import their materials/products as corporations do, rather, they make their own or buy from other small businesses. Therefore, I want to help these businesses by creating infomercials describing their positive impact to other local businesses and the environment. This is my career goal and dream for the future of business.
