Little can a person imagine the impact a teacher has on their life. In third grade, I was suffering immense emotional trauma living at a foster home. In this environment, there was no one to show me love, or an interest in my dreams. Yet stepping into my classroom that school year, I encountered a teacher who cared about who I was, and where my life was headed. For the next few months, I woke up eager to attend class and bask in my teacher’s care.
I was adopted later that year, and believe today that had my teacher not showered me with love, I would never have survived that last year in that abusive home. Shortly after adoption, I told my new Mom, I want to be a teacher, to help hurting kids.
Today, I have two goals, to teach and pursue politics. Why? The educational system hinders many teachers from doing the best for their students and my passion is to reinvent American Education.
This is why I am pursuing a double major in teaching history, and political science. I’m also substitute teaching and working at an after school program. I want to get the experience and knowledge that many bureaucrats never gain.
Knowing the impact awesome teachers have on a child’s life, fills me with a desire to give every child the opportunity to enjoy an amazing classroom environment.
