Ever since my grandfather lived in a memory care home due to Alzheimer’s disease taking over his life, I was inspired to pursue a career in Geriatrics and specifically Alzheimer’s study. I loved my Grandfather very much and before the dreadful disease took him, he was a caring, loving man who gave back to the community. His career was in social work for the Native American community on Lower Brule Sioux Reservation. Like him and many others in the memory care home they could not do simple functions such as eating or using the restroom.
I imagine myself helping individuals afflicted with awful diseases such as Alzheimer’s. I want to take care of these individuals as patients. I would change their lives, hopefully, by understanding and helping them. Their lives are just as important as all of ours and our elders have impacted this world by teaching, loving, and giving back to their community. I believe it is my duty to give back to them.
To pursue my dream of becoming a Geriatric Doctor I am going to get my Pre-Medical Degree so that I can eventually get my Medical Degree. During this, I would like to volunteer at local memory care homes, like the one my grandfather lived in. Spending time with my grandparents is time I cherished most.
