Chemistry is the study of changes in the bonds between atoms. Like all kinds of change, sometimes this change is good, other times it is horrendously bad. The job that I aspire to work at is that of a chemical engineer, someone who works to keep those positive changes while dealing with the consequences of the inevitable negative changes that happen in the world. Whether I work for a pharmaceutical company and work to make new chemicals to keep people’s bodies working at their optimum, or in the oil field, designing new ways to keep atrocities like the BP oil spill and the Exxon-Valdez oil tanker crash from happening, or lessen their impact on the environment.
However, in order to get to that point, it is necessary to know all that one can be taught about the nature of the chemicals one is working with. So I plan to attend the University of Colorado in order to gain a firm foundation in Chemical Engineering, so that whether I work for BP, or Bayer, or even Johnson & Johnson I can contribute to making the world a better place to live in doing the thing that I love.
