The weight of the keys beneath my fingers, with a delicate push I urge them to sing. Tender touches produce mighty melodies, a beautiful paradox I have enjoyed since the age of seven. Since that age, I have also held the belief that there is no instrument more lovely and elegant than the piano. Now at age 21, I still relish in my weekly lessons. In fact, if I could spend my life teaching others how this magnificent instrument can save them in ways they didn’t know possible, I believe that would be the most meaningful life I could live. Music is one of the great equalizers of the world. No matter who you are, with a little dedication and patience, the music staff is at your command. Music is also one of the best remedies for any ailment of the soul. How often do we turn to our favorite songs when we’re elated, joyous, melancholy, or pensive? By teaching others how to play the piano, I believe I could help them not only by allowing them an outlet for their own emotions, but that perhaps that would lead them to being better human beings to others. As Bono said, “Music can change the world because it can change people.”
