There is nothing in life like feeling happy; the trick is to find what makes YOU happy. My parents were happy children, even living in grim poverty in the farmlands of Ethiopia. They remember their childhoods with a painful fondness, because those experiences made them able to later build their own empire and become some of the most successful business owners in the country. They were still happy when, years later, political unrest erupted and our family fled with nothing but the clothes on our backs. And they remain happy, working 2 jobs tirelessly to give myself and my 3 siblings the comfortable lifestyle we once had. If nothing else, their lives have taught me to find joy in the simplest of things, and it’s up to you to share it with others. In my years of personal growth, I’ve found that my joy stems from feeling my very best, and I want to do everything I can to guarantee others feel the same. In my vision, my passion for equity and giving the powerless a voice intersects with my interest in healthcare. I dream of being a physician travelling to under-served communities around the world to help teach community leaders, elders, and teachers basic hygienic, dietary, and procedural measures that would provide their communities with personalized healthcare from their community, for their community. I dare other healthcare providers to re-imagine public health, and help communities build sustainable and practical models of healthcare to give their communities what they need.
