The elderly population in our country is growing at a very quick rate due to the aging of the baby boomer generation. The needs of this population are going to need to be met by health care professionals who have a sincere passion for caring for the elderly. As a senior nursing student at Niagara University I have had the opportunity to explore different aspects within the vast field of nursing which has lead me to discover that it is my true desire to be a geriatric nurse practitioner. For the past three years while attending Niagara University I have also worked at Our Lady of Peace Nursing home as a dietary aid. This has given me the hands on experience of working with the elderly. My favorite moments are when I know that I have enhanced a resident’s day just by talking with them or taking them for a walk. The happiness brought by these little moments have driven me to add Gerontology as my double major. I also plan to pursue my nurse practitioner licensure after I complete my BSN in the spring. I will be applying for graduate programs this year to make my dream a reality. I know that working as a compassionate geriatric nurse practitioner could change the world because I will be caring for the generation that has cared for and paved the way for us. Nothing would be more rewarding to me than to care for the elderly every day.
