Heartbeats . . . rhythm and timing at the core of our beings. Drummers understand this. Teaching the world to reach into their inner beats would be the best way to develop global understanding and connectivity. Playing the drums, and getting paid to do it, would be the best way I can think to live my life. Supporting this endeavor through education and then providing a platform for others to pursue drumming on a community level would be the pathway towards a realization of this dream. The Holland Opus Foundation currently supports “The Big Beat,” a nationally recognized fundraiser to support music in schools, particularly drumming. From early childhood education through adult education, drums should be a prominent part of every curriculum from simple beats on the bongos to full sessions on the acoustic kit. Drumming helps students of all ages with cognitive skills while emphasizing both fine and gross motor skills. Drumming has been proven to support the healing process in patients with both physical recovery needs as well as those with ongoing psychological therapies. A simple beat . . . the heart . . . the life beating within each of us connects us all.
