Most people would consider me to be crazy, wanting to run a corps that would competitively compete within Drum Corps International. It’s an activity in which kids ages 15-21 pay thousands of dollars to travel the county. They spend twelve hours a day outside rehearsing every single day for three months, sleeping on gym floors or busses, for one purpose; trying to reach perfection of a twelve minute marching show.
But this organization teaches so much more than improving ones musical talents. It teaches discipline, self-motivation, leadership, and teamwork. It also gives everyone a sense of being, every weird corky personality can come together as one to achieve a common goal among the entire group, or as it should be called a family.
My dream would be to share the experience of being a part of a corps with other kids. Giving them the opportunity to learn what it feels like to truly be passionate about something. Teaching them when you truly love something or have a passion go after it and every effort you put into that something will be rewarded in the end if you truly try your hardest day in and day out.
I’m not exactly changing the world, but I know those kids who come through my program will have their world’s changed forever. My job would not be glorious or make me famous or rich, but knowing I am changing the life of our youth through music education is what is glorious.
