My name is Ravi Joshi & I’m passionate about graphic design. I am fond of this field not only because of its aesthetics but because of our everyday interactions with it. Art surrounds, communicates & bombards us. “From humble things like gum wrappers to huge things like billboards to the T-shirt you’re wearing, graphic design informs, persuades, organizes, stimulates, locates, identifies, attracts attention and provides pleasure”. As such, I am currently in pursuit of obtaining my associate’s degree in graphic design from Pratt Institute. My philosophy is trifold- that I communicate a message, evoke an emotion or a response from the audience, and that I keep my elements as simple, fluid & clean as possible. To me, successful design comes from an innate desire to do so but also immersing myself to study past concepts – to push further and produce creative solutions that allows the work to speak for itself.

I would use my skill-set to further several causes that would improve the lives of others. To me, graphic design can be used as a powerful tool enacting social change & increases visibility of issues such as the advancement of human rights, providing clean water supplies to developing countries, the protection of endangered species & the preservation of our environment.

A poster is considered a key medium because of its ability to showcase ideas, information & it promotes public discussion. In essence, it serves as a “telling indication of a graphic designer’s commitment to society as a way to raise money to support humanitarian causes”. (2)
