Syria, Ukraine, Palestine, Afghanistan. These are just a few countries that have grappled with conflicts that have displaced millions of people from their homes. Every day, there are reports of tragic conditions in refugee camps, where entire families are perishing while awaiting resettlement. If l could earn a living doing what I love most, I would do everything I could to empower refugees settling in new regions, and this is first achieved through granting refugees asylum in a safer country. I acknowledge this dream is vast, however, I adamantly believe that if a stable asylum-seeking process is established, this dream could easily be a reality. First, I would focus on one continent to help set up a global model for addressing resettlement needs. Europe’s refugee intake system is in a fragile state due to the conglomeration of country’s independent asylum-seeking laws. Currently, each country has jurisdiction over the circumstances that refugees are accepted, and less than 1% of asylum applications are ever granted, leading to widespread detention, homelessness, and poverty among refugees settling in Europe. My dream is to establish a European Asylum Support Office, in order to successfully manage European states’ asylum applications. I would then work with this Office to petition the exclusionary policies of individual European countries, in order to create a stable and continental asylum-seeking process. With asylum granted, refugees could truly begin a new life, finally able to participate in the everyday activities we seem to take for granted, like entering school and seeking employment.
