I wish more people could look at a world map and erase its borders; not borders as they pertain to human migration, but as a way of thinking across the globe. I would like to work in cross-cultural engagement in a business to break the barrier between US customs and other cultures as they pertain to business. For example, when things go awry, everyone says the same thing: “it was a misunderstanding.” If less people “misunderstood” each other due to cultural differences, we would be able to see that the goal of EVERYONE is to be understood. Everyone has that right. Sharing your culture with someone else is invaluable, and when reciprocated, is very rewarding as well. People cannot help their natural way of thinking about people who are different, but if it is brought to everyone’s attention, that person will always be aware of it. My plan to execute this way of thinking in myself is to learn a second language and live in another country for a semester. Traveling alone and to foreign countries will help me master the logistics of traveling, and the way people live outside of my country. I hope to use this experience when I find a post-college job, and I hope my employer will understand my passion to help people in any way possible when it pertains to the customs and regulations of my country. So, will my future line of work change the world? Probably not, but my way of thinking will.
