I love playing guitar. I have wanted to for as long as I can remember, and ever since I got one at fourteen, I have been obsessed with playing. Right now I play in a rock band. We have a real, professionally recorded album out, and we tour the country playing for…dozens of people. We even get paid sometimes.
This essay is about how we would change if we could make a living doing what we love. I suppose it’s possible to make a living as a musician, but it’s not a lucrative one. I have seen how I am changing the world, though, and I see this, because I am a female. Being a female in a professional hard rock band is apparently still an uncommon thing, even in the year 2014. I have been rejected at auditions because people did not ‘want a girl in their band;’ one guy even expressed to me that it was really his wife who had the problem.
The change that I see? Now, guys who don’t even acknowledge my presence when I get out of the van come up to me after shows and say, “I’m really sorry. I thought you were a band girlfriend or something. You were awesome!”
The reputation that women have in the world of hard rock isn’t great, but at least I get to help change it, one show at a time.
