As I am currently working towards a nursing degree, I hope that one day I can spread the word on the seriousness of food allergies. As the mother of 5 children, one of my daughters has life threatening food allergies. It is by far the hardest thing I have ever had to deal with. Being labeled the ” helicopter mom”, feeling unwelcome at school functions and my daughter missing out on her childhood, I hope by becoming a nurse educator, no other child or family will feel this way. I hope that one day, I can travel from school to school, put on seminars and classes to educate the need of prevention and interaction of children with food allergies. Over the years, I have come to realize that parents choose a cupcake over a child’s life. I have had to learn the hard way that many children who live with food allergies are bullied and always left out. I would like to bring compassion back. I want all children alike to be included and not feel different. I hope by becoming a nurse educator, I can make a much needed change within schools for the happiness and safety of all.
