As someone who hopes to be a concept designer for characters, I love reading comics, manga, and playing video games. Looking at the details, effort, and time spent drawing and developing these characters inspires me. However, as a female I am very disheartened with how overly sexualized many of the female characters are. More often than not many of the artists end up with the female characters with skinnier than average waists and outfits that are highly revealing and would never work to fight crime in the “real world.” Wonder Women’s strapless suit, with only a piece of medal holding it up, and power girls suit with an entire hole missing almost on her chest are just two of the many examples. I hope to one day create a female character that is more real, one that isn’t overly sexualized, and make the world a little bit freer from male harassment, hopefully starting with the cosplay community. Cosplay (dressing up as a character from anything you love) is usually the place females get harassed the most with the outfit they’re wearing. Women simply trying to show their love for a character have to face men sexually harassing them (verbally and sometimes physically) just based on an outfit the character was originally wearing. It may just be a concept; a “real” not overly sexualized female character, but it could start to change the world; First with conventions, costumes, and comic books, and hopefully transferring that newfound respect into everyday life.
