It is with great anticipation that I am applying for the 2014 Take Lessons Scholarship. I have a passion for American Indian Studies and social welfare and it is to my understanding that my tribe needs help in this field of work. I am an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs Oregon and my goal is to provide a tribal aspect in the social work field. This will help eliminate the lack of understanding by providing an empathetic outlook toward indigenous people. There are plenty of social work cases where the cultural aspects were not understood so I believe I can assist other social workers in gaining an understanding to prevent future disputes with tribal beliefs. My goal is to obtain my degree, which will allow me credibility as it relates to teaching tribal sovereignty to other social workers. When I have completed my education in the Masters program, I would like to produce an immersion program for my fellow coworkers. The program would include teaching traditional tribal languages, religious beliefs, cultural beliefs and values, and accustomed tribal lifestyles found in tribal communities in certain social worker districts. This will be a long step by step process when it comes to gathering the large amount of tribal information, but I know with perseverance I am capable of completing this task and it’s a goal I plan to accomplish. Thank you for your time and consideration. I appreciate the program for assisting scholars like me with financial help.
