It wasn’t until this year, at the age of 38 that I came across my dream. I took a job as a para educator to a child who is visually impaired. My past experiences were teaching at Head Start, so this was completely new for me. The little girl has a condition is which she is quickly loosing her sight. I asked the district to train me in braille, but they said they offer no training. I decided to learn while she leaned when her VI teachers came. I learned the braille alphabet in a month. I taught myself to use a Perkins Braille writer, I took contuining education classes at home, online. I learned to use a peg slate, slate and stylus, and braille cell. I have seen all the problems with the schools and the VI dept. and how specil needs kids are being treated. I am going to finish my BA in special ed. in low vision and blindness and help make positive changes!
