Think about the way you are reading this essay. You are reading it because of years of training with spelling, grammar, syntax and context. You understand because of rules about word order and verb usage. This is not just about English, but about language. To get paid to study and learn languages would be amazing. Not just to greet, but to ingrain the thought so deep that one thinks in another language would be incredible. Learning other languages opens up millions of new people to talk to, and varying cultures to explore.
There are differences in language that are not present in most foreign languages. For example the Tuyuca language requires the speaker to place an ending on a verb based on whether the speaker received the information first hand, second hand or third hand. Most people don’t even think about this when speaking because it is not a requirement in English, but in Tuyuca the mind compensates. It is amazing what the mind can do when trained. This language is only spoken by a few hundred people residing in the Amazon area of Columbia and Brazil. I want to save special languages like this that are on the verge of becoming extinct.
