Hello! Thank you for your interest in taking guitar/piano/music lessons.
I am a professional teacher/studio musician/performer/producer with over 17 years of private teaching experience and a graduate of the University of Miami Studio Music and Jazz program in 2002 specializing in the guitar.
I am available to teach guitar(acoustic, electric, classical) for all levels, ages, and styles(pop to folk, rock to soul, world to classical) in English, Spanish and Japanese.
Other subjects taught include bass guitar, keyboard, harmonium, classical percussion, music theory, composition(all styles from pop to classical), ear training, and studio production/engineering/mixing.
Born in Cali, Colombia on April 1979, I began my musical endeavors studying the piano at the age of 6. Early on I had the opportunity to play percussion in the school symphony while at the same time developed an intense interest in the instrument that would become my true love, the guitar.
During 1996-98 I studied jazz guitar at the New World School of the Arts music program under the direction of J.B. Dyas and Dr. Roby George. Upon graduation, I was immediately accepted to the University of Miami jazz guitar program under the direction of Randall Dollahan. It was during this time that I also refined my skills as a classical guitarist and as a composer/arranger. In addition, I began passing my knowledge onto friends and eventually began working as a teacher.
My ability to play almost any genre of music is the fruit of past experience playing with an impressive variety of music groups, including jazz combos, symphony orchestras, Andean world music ensembles, and several rock and pop groups as well. As a studio guitarist I have recorded for various artists including Jaci Velasquez, Carlos Ponce, Alexandre Pires, and Noelia.

"I simply teach my Students how to play Music with their chosen instrument/media as opposed to JUST playing an Instrument." John Linnon Ellis, M.B.A., B.B.A.
John is a very well rounded and patient Music Instructor. He has the ability to objectively and intuitively develop methods and approaches that address each students unique Learning Style and needs. Because of this, students learn and retain at progressively accelerated rates by building upon fundamental sets of acquired skills which in turn become strong foundations for all future lessons.
Because of his activities in Middle School, John received a full scholarship to the Honsinger Conservatory of Music where he pursued Virtuoso Studies on Saxophone, studied Music Theory and toured Europe, Canada and the United States as the youngest member of the Honsinger Symphonic Wind Ensemble. In this highly disiplined and demanding environment, John learned the essencial work ethics of Musicianship and Performance through hard work, focus and dedication. One of Doctor Honsingers mandates was that each of us had to practice our music for at least 4 hours per day. In addition, as part of various local bands and orchestras, John performed with many well known groups and musicians including: The Rockettes, James Brown and Al Green.
In High School, Johns work as Drum Major for the Marching Band and Student-Teacher for Band Class earned him the respect of many of his peers. Therefore, he was sought out by many young local musicians for guidance and instruction, in and outside of the classroom, because of his ability to simplify and explain music concepts that were too difficult for them to understand and master. Throughout High School he continues to perform as Saxophonist, Band Leader and Arranger for various local and national Recording Artists such as: James Brown, Bobby Byrd, Chaka Kahn and Lionel Ritchie.
As a Music Major in college, John studied Music Theory, Sight-Singing, Music Appreciation, Classical and Jazz Performance, Piano, Composition and Arranging, thereby further refining his professional skills as a performer and instructor. He also tutored Piano 101 and Jazz Improvisation for the Dean of Music. In addition, John studied Fencing for his P.E. requirement as well as core academic courses.
After College, John moved to Los Angeles, California in order to pursue more opportunities in the Music Industry. For over a decade his many accomplishments include touring as a Saxophonist/Flautist/Arranger with Cuba Gooding Sr. and working with several well known Recording Artists including, Ray Parker Jr., Doc Severinsen, and Kevin (Keb'Mo) Moore.
In 1991, he received his Masters Degree in Business Administration and has been working as a Business Consultant in the Music Industry since that time to the present. Very similar to teaching, his consulting work requires him to educate his clients in regards to: Copyright Administration, Intellectual Property Protections, Name Branding, Publicity, Corporate Administration, Business Start-Ups, etc.
Additionally, John has over three years of recent experience as a Tutor in the No Child Left Behind program. Combining this with prior teaching experience has enabled him to develop highly a comprehensive array of tools and strategies. The result, is the ability to create and implement Learning Plans and Curriculums that are relavent to the specific needs and Learning Styles of each individual Student.
Furthemore, his experience at the Macy Gray Music Academy as a Woodwind Instructor gave him even more opportunities to apply his skills and experience to the classroom and private instruction formats. At the Academy John was responsible for developing and implementing Study Curriculums for: Music Theory, Performance, Musicianship, Saxophones, Flute, Clarinet, the Recorder and other Woodwinds.
In summary, John is passionate about using his varied and eclectic background in ways that empower his sudents and clients alike to accomplish all of their goals in the fastest and most enjoyable way possible.
John has been married for 20 years and has four children. He also enjoys Tennis, Chess, Martial Arts and Science Fiction.
Let him help you find your music!

My musical journey started when I was 10 years of age. I fell in love with the guitar and started taking lessons from a local academy. My first guitar teacher taught me a variety of musical styles and provided me with a solid foundation that would help me with the rest of my career. I continued taking lessons all the way through high school and then went on to study musical education in college.
Throughout my life I have played with many different bands, covering; alternative, rock, reggae, and pop. Currently, I compose and record my own music, lead a band, give guitar and keyboard lessons, and also work as an audio engineer.
Learning how to play guitar at an early age has helped me relate to all kinds of students and their abilities. I was there; I know how exciting it is to start learning the guitar and can guide you through all the necessary steps in order for you to learn and succeed.

I've been playing music my whole life, but it was as a high school student when I was asked to teach the school's guitar class that I became a teacher. Since that time I've gone on to earn several awards, played in many different types of projects, and earned a Master's degree. You might have heard my music before too if you've ever listened to a podcast, TV commercials, indy films, or played any video games. My most successful student thus far however, would have to be Jacob Tilley from the rock band Young the Giant.
Not everybody wants to be a rock star though, and there are many aspects to the world of music. During the course of my musical adventure I've played with orchestras, been in rock, bluegrass, reggae, pop and blues bands, classical ensembles and more. I have also had the opportunity to play for celebrities and diplomats. Basically I've done a little of everything and I believe that it is this diversity of experiences that makes me a better teacher. Having worked in so many settings gives me a broad understanding that I use to help you reach whatever goals you might have.
I have also become adept at writing, recording and producing music, studying under Frank Wright of the legendary rock band Chicago. If you have an interest in creating and/or recording music I can definitely help you get there! Check out my chill/downtempo instrumental album 'Night Music' by Kparx online.

Drew got a guitar at the age of 11, and started taking formal lesson right away. He was drawn to classic rock and blues early on. While taking lessons he was introduced to different styles such as Jazz, Funk, Metal, and Shred. He stopped taking lessons after a year and began to learn by transcribing songs by ear. He soon began learning to play songs by artist such as AC/DC, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, and Eric Clapton. After working on his technique and theory he was able to progress to songs by Pantera, Paul Gilbert, Richie Kotzen, Blues Saraceno, Andy Timmons, and Yngwie Malmsteen. After High School Drew attended Musicians Institute's G.I.T program In Hollywood, CA and completed his Associates Degree in Guitar Performance and Music Theory.
